Russian Folk Art

The 8-minute documentary video opens with tolling bells and snow falling on Sergiev Posad Monastery near Moscow. The town of Sergiev Posad has Russia's pre-eminent Toy Museum and a Museum of Folk Art. Objects from these collections are featured, along with those from Abramtsevo Museum-Estate, Moscow's State Historical Museum and State Tretyakov Gallery, as well as the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg. The narrator is Dr. Alison Hilton, Chair of the Department of Art, Music and Theater at Georgetown University.

Dr. Hilton's book Russian Folk Art (Indiana University Press) is the definitive study of the subject in the English language. For more about the book, click on www.indiana.edu

A compact disk of the Russian Folk Art web site is available for use in schools. Contact swashers@aol.com or zevs@robotek.ru
